As a 2012 Shepherd Summer Scholar, Joe worked as a Summer Fellow at PAVE Academy Charter School in Red Hook, Brooklyn. PAVE prepares kindergarten through eighth grade students from the historically impoverished community of Red Hook for competitive high schools and four year colleges. As a Summer Fellow, he co-founded and directed an after school tutoring program for kindergarten through third grade students. Joe also conducted a long-term research project on gender and achievement patterns in the New York State Test (NYST). Frequent community outreach initiatives in Red Hook helped to broaden and more fully color his understanding of PAVE and its students. This balance of on-site work and community outreach is what makes the Shepherd Summer Scholarship unique: it provides a demanding full-immersion experience for the student who wants to learn just as much as contribute.
